June 18,
2012 will mark the 200th anniversary of the start of the War of
1812. The War officially commenced with
the signing of the nation’s first Declaration of War by President James Madison
on June 18, 1812.
The Town
of Nassau is
seeking your assistance in honoring all those residents that have served. If you
know of an ancestor or resident that served in this conflict, please let us
know. If know of a veteran of the
War of 1812 interred in Nassau and you know of their burial location, please
inform us as we would like to honor them on the anniversary of the war.
Residents
who fought to protect the young Republic during this conflict included
Major-General John B. Wool, one of the most respected soldiers in eastern New York in those days;
Captain Simeon Tifft, Captain David St. John, Rensselaer Bateman, Reuben
Rogers, Varnum Babcock, Jacob Cole, Jeremiah Tifft, Thomas Tobias, Isaac
Wheeler and George Launt.
